Fields is an installation containing an interactive kinetic sculpture based around the principles and interactions of magnetism. It houses powerful neodymium magnets, a Tri-Field magnetic sensor, precise stepper motors, and the electronics that power and control them.
During interaction, the magnetic presence of the user is detected by the Tri-Field EM and interpreted by the Basic Stamp microcontroller and stepper motor controller. The motors move the attached neodymium magnets underneath a surface of magnetically responsive liquid, ferrofluid. This liquid rests on the very top of the entire structure.
Magnetic fields projected by the magnets causes the fluid to warp and shape itself around the fields of the magnets, no solid physical structures are utilized to create the resulting shapes.
